This article surveys the many bibles that were available to preachers in England from the early sixteenth century to the early eighteenth century. It describes the idea of ‘the Bible’ as more stable than any particular Bible, and was differentiated by distribution, accessibility, translation, and production. It also introduces the Authorized Version of the English Bible and shows that after a century and a half of changes, the Bible of England and English sermon finally settled down.
