This article discusses the various aspects of the class cleavage. An outline of Karl Marx's and Max Weber's conceptions of social class is provided. The class cleavage is placed within the context of political behaviour in the well-known Lipset and Rokkan model for political cleavages in industrial societies. The article discusses the different phases in the study of class voting, and gives an outline of a possible new trend in class-voting analysis. Class schemas, statistical measurements, and explanations of cross-national differences in class-voting and systematic empirical tests are then summarized. Finally, the article reviews the important debates in the studies of class voting.
