This article examines the relationship between the disciplines of modernist studies and twentieth-century literary theory. Examples of this close relationship are theories focusing on literature's context, particularly the cultural materialism developed in the tradition of Marxist and post-Marxist criticism. The article discusses the principles of Russian formalism and New Criticism, and comments on New Criticism's general claim that literature and the act of reading bear a close resemblance to modernist poetics.
