This article considers some of the key issues that arise in the study of sexuality within modernism and some of the ways in which modernist critics have responded to them. It explains that the central difficulty of analysing the issue of sexual identity within modernism is that the analysis of sexual identity requires an understanding of sociocultural and affective issues and frames, while the analysis of the cultural forms of modernism involves the skills of literary and critical reading, as well as the consideration of cultural context. The article also discusses key message of The Contact Collection of Contemporary Writers, an example of a little-known modernist literary artefact.

Keywords: sexuality; modernism; sexual identity; sociocultural issues; affective issues; cultural forms; critical reading; Contact Collection
