This article presents dominant approaches that structure knowledge about center-periphery relationships. It also summarizes key findings from a comparative perspective. The first section views territory as a social and political construct, and then pinpoints the various contemporary issues. This is followed by a discussion of the issues that relate to the nation states and those that relate to beyond the dynamics of nation-states. Other topics discussed in this chapter include interorganizational analysis, political dynamics, and state theories.
