This article looks at international political institutions and is divided into three main sections. The first section offers some theoretical and historical insights into the understanding of international organizations. The second section talks about the United Nations (UN), the European Union (EU), and several other regional actors as exemplars of contemporary international organizations. It notes that regional organizations are quickly becoming very important. The third main section of the article examines the different ways international organizations have been studied by scholars of international relations.
