This article analyses the link between governance and patronage. It argues that patronage provides a critical tool through which politicians can seek to steer and control the complex networks which the study of governance highlights, and suggests that patronage may have evolved to fulfil a more positive and critical role within modern democratic governance. The article also explores the utilization of patronage by politicians in Qatar, Thailand, and Great Britain, and considers the place of patronage within a number of much broader themes, particularly within the topic of regulatory governance.
