This article comments on the conception of new governance as a new ‘style’ of governing. It discusses the common argument in support of the emergence of new governance which proposes that societies have become more complex, and that this complexity demands a new style of governing. The article argues that what is now termed as new governance has a long pedigree, both in the real world of policy making and in the academic literature. It also analyses the changes in the British policy style, highlighting similar changes elsewhere in Europe, and discusses European Union-level policy style.
