This chapter examines the rhetoric of Holinshed's Chronicles, addressing the question of how an awareness of their rhetorical composition, the English histories in particular, affects their political reading. To explore this, it focuses mainly on one particular episode, which Annabel Patterson describes as the ‘climactic’ moment in this work's history of the English Parliament: the deposition of Richard II in 1399.
