This chapter contextualizes Holinshed's incorporation of a separate Irish section within the Chronicles by exploring how its multilayered scholarship reflects changing Irish and English perceptions of the smaller island from 1570 to 1587. Ireland is contextualized by many cross-references at appropriate points to the English and Scottish Chronicles, as well as by some additions of material relating to the general history of the islands of Britain and Ireland. The influence of Giraldus Cambrensis as chorographer and historian was evident in the work of all of the commentators who contributed to the two editions of the Chronicles.
