This article provides an overview of the kinds of development that have characterized the study of early Roman pottery by focusing first on the context of Egypto-Roman pottery studies within Egyptian pottery studies more generally. It then turns to an examination of the production of pottery in Roman Egypt and the wares, fabrics, and forms of the kinds that are characteristic of the period, as well as the evidence for imports. A short section on amphoras — both imported and domestic — is also included, along with a final section on directions for future work and suggested reading.
