This article counters the fact that there is relatively little research that broadens the focus to include the range of mobile information technologies (IT) and aims to outline the main issues of relevance for the understanding of mobile IT, such as unpacking the issue of mobility and contemporary research themes. It also provides examples of discussions of enterprise mobility based on a series of case studies conducted. It considers ‘enterprise mobility’ as an outcome of the use of mobile IT in and between organizations, and raises critical issues in our understanding the intersection between the individual experience with mobile IT at work and the organizational concern for efficiency. It further characterizes mobile IT and discusses mobility as a means of conceptualizing the use of mobile IT. This article presents pertinent themes related to the study of mobile IT and then illustrates issues specific to the organizational use of mobile IT.
