This article discusses the characteristics eighteenth-century Protestant funeral sermons. The total number of funeral sermons produced in the period remains uncertain. Many works only appear in collected sermon anthologies which, in turn, are printed in multiple editions. Most published funeral sermons employed the conventional asymmetrical structure while commemorating a named individual recognized, on either a local or national scale, for the exemplary nature of their Protestant virtues.
