 The Victorian Funeral Sermon

Show Summary Details

This article explores the funeral sermons of the Victorian period. It first analyzes the changes in the form and structure of funeral sermons during the period followed by a discussion of the attitudes of preachers to death and commemoration. It considers their treatment of the exemplary lives of the deceased, their views of the nature and significance of death itself, and their ideas about the afterlife. Finally, the sermons on the death of Queen Victoria are reviewed; these serve as an apotheosis for the genre as well as for the queen herself.
