This article examines the sermons of Bishop John Williams Colenso, the first Anglican Bishop of Natal, and their context within Victorian religious life. It begins with a case-study of Broad Church preaching. It then examines the way in which Broad Church ideas and themes were translated into sermons presented to a weekly congregation. It provides context for Colenso’s weekly sermons to his colonial cathedral congregation, first through a brief comparison with the Oxford College preaching of the Anglican Broad Church theologian Benjamin Jowett, and by considering their significance for the relationship between the Anglican Broad Church tradition and Victorian Unitarianism.
