Tradition, Preaching, and the Gothic Revival

This article explores the influence of the Gothic in the eighteenth century. It considers its impact on the shape of ecclesiastical architecture as well as the form and content of sermons. In particular, it analyzes the sermons of Laurence Sterne (1713–1768) and how they sought to affect and move the reader in ways that if not Gothic, are openly appealing to sentiment.
