This article examines the relation between grammaticalisation and cognitive grammar. It explains that cognitive grammar has a natural affinity with grammaticalisation owing to some basic features of the framework. It suggests that cognitive grammar provides an appropriate and revealing framework for investigating grammaticalisation and other diachronic phenomena and argues that a full account of grammaticalisation requires explicit descriptions of the conceptual structures and grammatical constructions involved at every stage.
