This article evaluates the relation between grammaticalisation and language acquisition. It compares several cases of grammaticalisation to the development of grammatical markers in child language and suggests that there are striking parallels in the semantic development of grammatical markers in ontogeny and diachrony. The findings reveal that there is no evidence that the acquisition of grammatical markers repeats the process of grammaticalisation or that the historical development of grammatical markers originates from changes in child language.
