This article analyses agreement markers in related to grammaticalisation. It shows that emphatic and demonstrative pronouns as well as nouns can be reanalysed as subject pronouns, which in turn can be reanalysed as agreement and later be lost. It discusses the linguistic cycle in general and addresses the question of whether subject and object cycles are the most relevant to the typology of a language. It provides examples of the subject cycle and the object cycle and examines possible explanations for why subject and object cycles exist.
