This article discusses issues relevant to the grammaticalisation of subordination. It explains that this is defined as a relation in which a clause has a function equivalent to that served by a word in a simple clause and that it has occupied an important place in grammaticalization studies. It analyses the general tendencies of the grammaticalisation of subordination and reviews some selected cases of the development of the three types of linguistic construction.
