This article deals with the grammaticalisation of direct speech constructions, particularly the emergence of quotative particles introducing direct speech. It discusses speech introducing clauses (SIC) and quotative marks and considers the further development of quotative markers into other grammatical functions. It describes the typology of the internal structure of SIC and argues that what determines the process of grammaticalisation is not the internal structure of the clause, but its use as a SIC.
