This article discusses issues relevant to the grammaticalisation of coordinating interclausal connectives. The markers included in this analysis as coordinating connectives are identified on the basis of their function, rather than on the basis of their morphosyntactic and distributional properties. It discusses the notion of interclausal connective and explains that two clauses can be linked in a number of different semantic relations either by being simply juxtaposed or by means of explicit linking devices and this distinction is commonly referred to as the opposition between asyndetic and syndetic constructions.

Keywords: coordinating interclausal connectives; grammaticalisation; distributional properties; morphosyntactic properties; semantic relations
