Globalization and technological developments during the twentieth century have led to major changes in the extent to which we can access music, the ways that we do so, and also the types of instruments which are played. These changes are increasingly impacting on pedagogy. This article begins with a discussion of the aims of learning to play a musical instrument, and then considers the following issues: practice, motivation, and pedagogy.
