This chapter presents recent research on wisdom and possible ways to become wiser. First, it briefly reviews studies on wisdom as related to age, gender, and cross-cultural differences and then turns to newer areas of research such as wisdom and leadership or management and the findings by neuroscience in the brain of areas associated with wisdom. Second, it looks at instruments that attempt to measure this complex and elusive concept. More research is being done these days on the practical uses of wisdom and ways that it can be learned or its development supported, including teaching about wisdom directly in the classroom as well as the skills associated with it. Future directions for study include the relationship of wisdom and ethics and its applicability for solving real-world problems.
