Retirement in the twenty-first century can take multiple forms. The current chapter adopts this broader perspective and examines what is known about learning and training for those who remain in a career job after reaching retirement eligibility, pursue some re-careering direction, opt for bridge employment or other work-related endeavors, engage in volunteer activities, or follow some personal educational/intellectual pursuits. Our findings suggest that this is an area of research and application that is broad, scattered, under-researched, and relatively unexplored. The adult education literature is vast but fragmented. The older adult work-related training literature is nearly invisible, and little is known about the extent or effectiveness of training programs that target older workers. The volunteer domain may provide the best example of organized approaches to training and learning opportunities for retirees. As the population of late career and retirement-eligible persons increases, learning and training programs—formal and informal—will become increasingly critical for supporting advancement along these varied retirement pathways. Learning and training in retirement is a fertile but relatively untapped area for research and development.
