Human errors are ubiquitous in complex systems and can lead to critical events. In this chapter we will characterize the significance of the critical event in health care and why anesthesiology as a specialty has taken the lead in patient safety. We will explore the contribution of cognitive engineering to health care. There will be a full discussion of the use of simulation to evaluate human performance and analyze critical events and the outcome of this research on clinical performance. Future uses of simulation to study critical events will be covered, with a view toward future collaboration with cognitive engineering.
