The chapter provides an overview of memory assessment of children and adolescents. The importance of memory to a developing organism is noted, and developmental trajectories of verbal and visual memory abilities are described. The relationship of memory with IQ is discussed, along with the additional background that is important for a clinician to understand when undertaking the assessment of memory. Historical roots are summarized, noting the empirical background reflected in contemporary memory tests. After touching on several assumptions made in memory assessment and describing types of memory that are assessed and the model assumed by most tests, five major instruments commonly used with children and teenagers are described in detail, including the WRAML2, TOMAL-2, the CMS, CVLT-C and NEPSY-II.
