This article describes a new class of digital performance activities that maintain the benefits of ensemble performance while providing cultural and pedagogical value by exploiting digital media practices. It focuses on a specialized software application called jam2jam, which allows real-time manipulation of generative music and video (or still image animations). The jam2jam systems can be connected over a local area network or over the Internet to create ensembles, and all networked jam2jam systems have their parameters and timing synchronized.
