Brian Cathcart trained as a journalist with Reuters before joining the Independent at its launch in 1986. He went on to be foreign editor and then deputy editor of the Independent on Sunday before leaving to become a freelance and author. Among his books are The Case of Stephen Lawrence—which won the Orwell Prize and the Crime Writers' Association Non-Fiction Award—and Jill Dando: Her Life and Death. He has written about crime and other matters for the Independent, the Guardian, the Daily Mail, the New Statesman, and Granta, among others. Since 2006, he has been professor of Journalism at Kingston University.
