Robinson, John (1774–1840), historian, was born at Temple Sowerby, Westmorland, on 4 January 1774, the son of humble parents, Henry and Agnes Robinson. He was educated at the grammar school in Penrith, and at Christ's College, Cambridge, where he was admitted a sizar on 1 January 1807 but did not graduate. He gained the degree of DD in 1815.
