Wilson, Robert (1803–1882), engineer, was born at Dunbar, East Lothian, where his father, a fisherman, was drowned in 1810. He became an expert sculler, and conceived the idea of making a hand-cranked propeller to be fixed to the stern of vessels. After a meagre education, he was apprenticed to a joiner.
