Ewer, William Norman (1885–1977), journalist, was born at Hornsey, London, on 22 October 1885, the only son of William Thomas Ewer, silk merchant, and his wife, Julia Stone. Scholarships took Ewer to Merchant Taylors' School, London, and Trinity College, Cambridge, where in 1907 he took a middle first in the mathematical tripos—he was classed as fifteenth wrangler out of thirty-one. He won the members' English prize in 1908 and in the same year took a first in part two of the history tripos....
