Davitt, Michael (1846–1906), Irish nationalist, was born in Straide, co. Mayo, on 25 March 1846, the second child of Martin Davitt and his wife, Catherine. Both parents were of peasant origins, but Davitt's father received a good early education and spoke English and Irish.
