Laszlo, Philip Alexius de [formerly Fülöp Elek László; Philip Alexius Laszlo de Lombos] (1869–1937), painter, was born in Budapest, Hungary, on 30 April 1869, the eldest son of the six children of Adolphus László, tailor, and his wife (d. 1915), who was a governess before her marriage. He was brought up in poor circumstances, having very little formal education, and while still a child of ten he worked for a scene-painter and learned photographic retouching.
