Brittain, Thomas (1806–1884), naturalist, was born in Sheffield on 2 January 1806, and baptized at the Howard Street Independent Chapel there on 27 February 1806, the son of Samuel Brittain and his wife, Ann. After receiving his education at a private school he followed a career as a professional accountant. Throughout his life, however, he pursued an active amateur interest in natural science and especially, after 1834 when he obtained his first microscope, in microscopy.
