Sargent, Sir (Harold) Malcolm Watts (1895–1967), conductor, was born in Ashford, Kent, on 29 April 1895, the only son of Henry Edward Sargent of Stamford, Lincolnshire, and his wife, Agnes Marion Hall, daughter of a Hertfordshire landscape gardener. Henry Sargent, employed in a coal merchant's business, was a keen amateur musician, an organist, and choirmaster, who carefully fostered his son's talent from the beginning.
