Meredith [née Lloyd], Susanna (1823–1901), philanthropist, was born in southern Ireland, the eldest of four daughters of the governor of Cork county gaol. Her early life is obscure. Her physician husband died of cholera a few years after they married, leaving her a childless widow; she never remarried.
