Whiffen, Thomas (1819–1904), manufacturer of fine chemicals, was born in London on 28 July 1819, the son of a cabinet-maker, William Whiffen (1790–1858), and his wife, Mary Ann. Nothing is known of Whiffen's education and early days; as a young man he worked as a clerk to a coal merchant for some time before training as a pharmacist. Once qualified it seems likely that he was employed in the business of a chemist and druggist, of whom there were many. On 29 July 1845 he married ...
