Charles, Elizabeth Rundle (1828–1896), novelist, only child of John Rundle (1791–1864), MP for Tavistock, and his wife, Barbara, née Gill (d. 1889), was born at The Bank, Tavistock, Devon, on 2 January 1828. In 1838 the family moved to nearby Brooklands, the house of her maternal grandfather. She was educated at home by governesses and tutors, in Latin, Greek, geometry, French, Italian, German, and music and began to write at an early age. ...
