Hodges, Richard (d. 1657), schoolmaster and author, lived and worked for most of his professional life in Southwark, London, 'near the midle-gate in Montague Close' adjacent to St Saviour's Church, Southwark. Although virtually nothing is known of his early life—his parentage, place and year of birth, extent and locations of his education—his writings reveal a man who was well lettered in the classical subjects, a keen observer of the history, phonology, and orthography of vernacular English, an able practitioner of arithmetic and accounting, and a staunch protestant....
