Dayes, Edward (1763–1804), watercolour painter, was born on 6 August 1763 in London. He was apprenticed to the mezzotinter and miniaturist William Pether and entered the Royal Academy Schools on 6 October 1780. He made his début at the academy in 1786, showing in the next few years a mixture of portraits, miniatures, topographical watercolours, and figure subjects, which set the tone for a wide-ranging career encompassing different media and subject types.
