Edwards, Edward (1738–1806), painter, was born in Castle Street, Leicester Square, London, on 7 March 1738, the elder son of a chairmaker and carver from Shrewsbury and his wife, Sarah. Possibly as a result of a childhood illness, Edwards was partially crippled, and remained of small stature for the rest of his life.
