A study has been carried out on the capabilities of a potential European Space Situational Awareness System (ESSAS). In this paper we focus on the capabilities of the future system with regards to correlating and cataloguing space debris. Different architectures are proposed and analysed. We report on the performances of these architectures with regards to the observable population, coverage, timeliness of observations, system sensitivity and system redundancy. Preliminary results for the capabilities of the ESSAS show good performances for cataloguing operations. The numerical simulations of the features of a possible ESSAS have been carried out using the Advanced Space Surveillance System Simulator (AS4) developed by DEIMOS Space, under several European Space Agency (ESA) contracts.
