Professor Hans Reiss left Germany on 22 August 1939, ‘cutting it rather fine’, as he puts it, for Ireland, where he studied and subsequently taught at Trinity College Dublin. He later held teaching posts at the London School of Economics and Queen Mary College, London, and was professor at McGill University and the University of Bristol. Professor Reiss has published twelve books and editions and over seventy articles that range widely across the fields of German literature, cultural history and political thought. In this historiographical review, he discusses recent research on the conduct of German literary scholars during the Third Reich.
