Lynn Hancock and Gerry Mooney seek to elaborate the ways in which the concept of advanced marginality and how it is constructed in the UK context in relation to dimensions of disciplinary social welfare policy. They extend Wacquant's term ‘penal pornography’ to embrace ‘poverty porn’ – the media portrayal of the allegedly ‘feral and feckless’ poor as the source of social breakdown. They also argue that the idea of the poor as a problem self-generated by pathological culture pre-dates the emergence of the present conditions of advanced marginality and indeed reinforces it.
