Are young people in the mid 2000s more depressed or anxious than they used to be? Do they have higher levels of conduct problems? Focusing particularly on the mid-adolescent period, this chapter reviews the evidence both from the author's own research, and from others working in the field, and concludes that there is good evidence that a minority of young people are indeed more likely to be suffering from mental health symptoms (emotional and conduct problems) than they were in the mid 1970s. There is some evidence that the increase in these problems has levelled off since 2000.
