This chapter sets the context of the book within academic writing and research from both the UK and US. Contemporary UK gang research is reviewed along with recent developments. UK research is grouped into three broad categories: Governance through Crime/ left idealists, Latter Day labelling Theorists/ Left idealists, and left Realists. Following on from this the chapter reviews key questions relating to gangs and reviews the academic contributions to these questions; including joining a gang, gang organisation, gang characteristics, gang behaviours and offending, respect and reputation, what it takes to be a competent actor in the gang. Finally it identifies gaps in research and questions yet to be answered in any emerging research agenda.
