Beyond ‘social glue’? ‘Faith’ and community cohesion

Show Summary Details

This chapter talks about the impact of faith and faith organisations on social cohesion. It acknowledges the potential divisiveness within certain religious interpretations and practices, and provides sufficient evidence that faith is positively related to civic and community participation. One section presents comments on the instrumental role that is attributed to faith communities in the community-cohesion agenda. It also argues that the complexity and independence of faith groups should not be misrepresented as non-allegiance to the secular state within overly simplistic functional and consensual definitions of community cohesion.
