This chapter provides an extended discussion of the theoretical lens through which the case histories are realized. It sketches the conceptual landscape for the book by framing the overall project and introducing a theoretical vocabulary. The first section of the chapter considers the argument that gender has been subject to a process of detraditionalisation, outlining the late-modern and feminist accounts as well as arguments emerging from studies of masculinities, social change, and sexualities. The second section discusses and locates young people within these debates on gender and sexual transformation.
