This chapter discusses the vital role played by continuous long-term partnerships. Despite its importance as an established, sustained and central relationship, long-term marriage and non-heterosexual long-lasting partnerships remain an under-researched area. The paucity of research in this area is highlighted against the value of long-lasting relationships in the lives of older men and women. Drawing on empirical research with long-married couples, this chapter examines the ways in which older people define and construct their relationships.
